New Page 1

Windows Live Messenger error 80048820 is one of the more common errors in Live Messenger

When this occurs we get the message Sorry we were unable to sign you in to messenger at this time, Please try again later.

There is no definitive solution to the issue, but it generally means one of two things either a system setting is invalid or something is blocking your connection.

Causes & Solutions

System date and time
Check and double check your date and time, if your system date and time are wrong this will prevent connections. If you find the date and time constantly changing this may be an issue with the CMOS battery.

Remove and reinstall Windows Live Messenger, as this only takes a few minutes it’s usually a fast way to repair windows live messenger error 80048820.
Live Messenger can be removed from Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and can be reinstalled from msn.com

There are a number of Live Messenger repair tools available, but after initial testing of two of these messenger error 80048820 was found to still be occurring.

softpub.dll

softpub.dll is a library file that contains support encryption functions, and this can require re-registering, to do this from the Start Menu > Run > and type regsvr32 softpub.dll
Completely close and restart Live Messenger, and not by simply just signing out.

Firewalls
Firewalls both hardware and software based can block all kinds of internet or network applications, a simple test for this is to disable it completely for a few minutes to test this.
Even applications such as Peer Guardian or Norton worm protection can also cause this. Once again disable them to test this.
If the problem is found to be a software firewall based you’ll need to setup rules to allow Windows Live Messenger to connect.
To disable a hardware firewall you’ll need to either login to the admin interface on your home router or speak to your system administrator if on a company network.

Proxy servers
If your computer, usually a laptop connects to a company network that uses a Proxy server and then you use it on your home network disable the Proxy server within Internet Explorer
Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings > Un-tick use a Proxy server Remember to change it back if you use a proxy server at work.

Other points to look for
Make sure your computer’s internet connection is working, check this by going to a new site so you can be sure that it’s not cached information that you are seeing.

Note
Remember just because there is a network connection showing on your computer, it usually means the connection from your computer to the router is ok, but does not mean the connection from the Router to the internet is working.

Does the Live Messenger service have a problem with your account? Easiest check for this is to login on another computer or get someone else to login to a Messenger account on your computer.
