Windows Live Messenger Port Problems

Windows Live messenger port problems simply happen when messenger cannot gain web access via it’s normal ports.
Personal or company firewalls are the main culprits, if you are using a personal firewall, simply by disabling it for a few minutes you’ll be able to confirm the firewall is causing the problem. Remember to enable the firewall after this.

Company firewalls are completely different, it’s better to check with your IT department to make sure that Windows Live Messenger is not blocked as part of a company policy.

The following ports need to be enabled.

Depending on what you wish to use Windows live messenger for,
Feature - Required Port

Sign in to the Messenger - TCP 80, 443, 1863
Network Detection - TCP 7001- UDP 9, 7001
Audio - TCP 80, 443, 1863
TCP/UDP - 30000 - 65535
Audio - UDP 5004 – 65535
Webcam / Video Conversations - TCP 80 TCP/UDP 5000 - 65535

But like all software ports only enable which ports you need, the more you have open of course the more security risks you have.
