Having Windows opening off screen can be a real pain.
This and also having files opening off screen is generally caused by..
- Having another external monitor which is disconnected, and the application or file remembers its screen position for this and opens off screen.
- The Window or open file was dragged to the edge of the screen and now cannot be seen or clicked on and dragged back into view.
- The video driver sees a secondary monitor even though one is not connected.
- Items have inadvertently been moved off screen using the method illustrated below.
Once you move any windows opening off screen back into view they should be saved in this position, the only thing preventing this is if your computer crashes and the position is not saved.
To move any files opening off screen right click on them from the task bar and select move, now use the arrow keys to move it back into view.
This method of resolving files opening off screen problems will only work with newer applications; many older types will not allow this.
To move older types around select the application by using Alt + Tab, then hit the ALT + Space Bar, now hit the Down Arrow key once, hit Enter you should have now selected the window that is off screen and you can move it back with the Arrow keys.
Tips
Once you have begun to move the Window around with the Arrow keys it will be automatically locked to the mouse cursor, try moving the mouse around and it should drag the window until you click the mouses button to release it. (you just need to ensure you press any arrow arrow key initially)
If you use two or more screens one of the easiest ways to get everything back on screen is to temporarily change the extended desktop back to a single display.

Setting Windows Back to a Single Screen
You can change this by right clicking on the desktop and selecting Properties for XP or Customize for Vista/Windows 7, under settings select screen 2 and untick Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor, then you can just change this back after seeing the items off screen.
