XP Repair Methods

An XP repair is always a better alternative than a complete system rebuild, due to the fact that the system retains applications and files, luckily most of the time Windows XP is indeed diverse enough to allow us to repair it one way or another. Before attempting any xp repair though make sure you backup any files you wish to keep, generally any files should be ok, but it’s better to be cautious in this respect.

To repair XP we have a few options available to us. If you are using this page from computer with the issue, make sure you either print or bookmark this page as you may have to reboot your system several times or more.

To begin with before we attempt any kind of Xp repair have you tried any other avenues? By this I mean in line with the issue your system is experiencing,

so if your system is frequently crashing or running slow, have you checked for virus’s, spyware or even cleaned up your system by defragmenting and using an application such as regclean which removes unused registry entries, has your system only run slow after an application or new driver was installed? Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Another quick way to repair xp is the last known good configuration, to invoke this boot your computer, hit the F8 key, you should now see a small menu with various options, one of the options is Last Known Good Configuration, select this your pc will reboot, see of the issue is still occurring.

Now that you are satisfied that the system definitely needs to be repaired, you have the following two choices of Xp repair pro and home editions both will work on either.

The first and perhaps the most easy is the system restore, this enables you to restore your system to an earlier date, simply just select the date just before the system started experiencing issues, I am not going to cover system restore here, but we have a complete article on how to do this,

please see link at bottom of page.

To repair xp You will need your Windows xp cd
to begin with Boot from the CD, to do this you may have to hit the boot menu screen key as your computer starts up, usually the F12 key, but your system will advise which key will enable you to enter the boot screen as it boots up.

If you cannot access the boot screen this can be done through the BIOS usually F2 on start-will get you into the BIOS from here you will need to make the CD boot before the hard drive.

Once this is done, on system boot up you’ll get a message Press Any Key to Boot From CD, once this is done your system will now boot from the CD

Now you should see the Welcome to Setup Screen Press Enter Press enter to start the Windows setup DO NOT Select To Repair a Windows XP installation Using the Recovery Console Press R

Accept the License Agreement

Select the Installation you wish to repair and press R to begin the xp repair

The repair will now take a few minutes to complete, once done the pc will reboot and you will hopefully have a working pc.

NOTE
once this is done make sure your windows or third party firewall is active before going onto the web to run your windows updates, at this stage the updates on your computer are out of date making your pc vulnerable to all kinds of web nasties.
